SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers opened new Levi's Stadium with a thud Sunday, losing 34-0 to the Denver Broncos in a preseason game.

The Broncos (2-0) made themselves at home in the $1.3 billion stadium. Quarterback Peyton Manning completed 12 of 14 passes for 102 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Julius Thomas. In all three Denver quarterbacks, went 30-for-38 for 270 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick finished 5-for-9 for 39 yards for San Francisco (0-2).

Panthers 28, Chiefs 16

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina quarterback Cam Newton led two touchdown drives in Charlotte, North Carolina, during his first preseason action on a surgically repaired left ankle.

Newton completed four of nine passes for 65 yards, and he was sacked twice. However, the Panthers (1-1) led 14-6 when he exited the game in the second quarter. Carolina running back Fozzy Whittaker produced 71 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and running back Jonathan Stewart added two rushing TDs.

Quarterback Alex Smith threw for 127 yards on 14-of-22 passing for Kansas City (1-1).
