Boris Diaw played an integral role for San Antonio as the Spurs won the NBA title this past season. Diaw parlayed his excellent play into a new three-year, $22.5 contract.
No wonder the Spurs were a little fearful when Diaw said he wanted to play for France in this summer's FIBA World Cup.
Teammate Manu Ginobili was training to play for Argentina when he felt pain from a stress fracture. The Spurs shut Ginobili down.
To be cleared to play, Diaw, the captain of the French team, had to acquire enough insurance. He finally did and now has the Spurs' blessing to participate.
"The matter is settled. It is being finalized, it is a matter of hours" before Diaw can start to practice, a representative of the French national team told reporters.
Diaw is expected to play this weekend when France takes on the Philippines.
Spurs teammate Tony Parker is not playing for France this summer. He has decided to rest and spend the time with family.
