LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -

Two people escaped to safety in dinghy when the 40-foot boat they were traveling in caught fire and sank near Avalon Harbor in California on Friday morning, authorities said.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the incident about 10:30 a.m., according to Lt. j.g. Sean Haley.

The 40-foot pleasure craft, named Real Joy, sank in 2,400 feet of water, Haley said.

The incident occurred 4 nautical miles north of Avalon, on Catalina Island.

The two people were taken by responding rescuers from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach to Avalon for evaluation, Haley said.

They were not injured.
