Winter sign: McKenzie Pass, other hwys. close for season
Deschutes Co. closing Cascade Lakes Hwy., Paulina Lake Road
Maintenance managers with the Oregon Department of Transportation made the decision to close the Old McKenzie Pass Highway, OR HIghway 242, for the winter/snow season on Saturday.
Weekend snowfall, several vehicle crashes and forecasts for more snowfall prompted ODOT to make the decision to close the highway, officials said Monday.
ODOT’s records indicate that the earliest closure of the Old McKenzie Pass Highway occurred on October 18, 1996. The latest closure happened on January 10, 1939. The closure for 2012 occurred on November 13.
The Deschutes County Road Department will be performing the annual winter closure of the Cascade Lakes Highway at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The road will be closed west of Mt. Bachelor between the snow gates at Dutchman Flat and Deschutes Bridge at the intersection with Forest Service Road 4270.
This portion of the Cascade Lakes Highway will be closed through the winter and will be targeted for reopening prior to Memorial Day, weather permitting.
The road department also will be performing the annual winter closure of Paulina Lake Road (Road 21) at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
The road will be closed at the ten-mile snow park gate, thereby restricting access to Paulina and East Lake. Paulina Lake Road will be closed through the winter and will be targeted for reopening during the last week of May.
