PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland man charged with aiming a laser beam at two commercial airliners flying toward Portland International Airport last fall has pleaded guilty in federal court.
Stephen Francis Bukucs (BOO'-kuhs) is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 24.
The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/CDXXsj0 ) that federal prosecutors plan to seek a two-year prison term for the 40-year-old former security guard. Bukucs' attorney declined to comment after Tuesday's hearing.
Court papers show the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Portland police and other agencies conducted a four-plane video surveillance in August in a Portland neighborhood where previous laser incidents had originated.
After FBI planes were targeted by green lasers, investigators tracked down the laser beam to Bukucs' apartment. They say Bukucs pointed a laser at airplanes multiple times.
The lasers can temporarily blind pilots.
