Same-sex marriage by state

A St. Louis circuit judge ruled on Wednesday that Missouri's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The decision comes a day after a federal judge ruled that neighboring Kansas also was violating the U.S. Constitution by refusing to allow same-sex marriages. Here's a look at the path same-sex marriage has taken across the country.

On March 1, 2012, Maryland's governor signed a bill into law legalizing gay marriage, but opponents gathered enough signatures to force the issue onto the ballot. Voters affirmed the law in a November 2012 state referendum, and the law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2013.
