Same-sex marriage by state

A St. Louis circuit judge ruled on Wednesday that Missouri's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. The decision comes a day after a federal judge ruled that neighboring Kansas also was violating the U.S. Constitution by refusing to allow same-sex marriages. Here's a look at the path same-sex marriage has taken across the country.

In Washington, the governor signed a bill allowing gay marriage on Feb. 13, 2012. Opponents got enough signatures for a referendum vote, and the law only went into effect on Dec. 6, 2012, after voters approved the measure.
