Although they won't be vacationing in Martha's Vineyard, the Obamas will fit in some "family time" and continue to hit the campaign trail this summer, President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama said in an interview.

Neither offered where, if anywhere, the first family will travel between now and the September Democratic National Convention in North Carolina, but the president acknowledged he would be spending a significant amount of time campaigning for re-election.

"Most of it's going to be campaigning," Obama said in an interview with CBS News, portions of which aired Sunday. "The girls are now of an age where they start having their own stuff, so they have sleep-away camp for a month -- welcome relief.

"We're going to be experiencing the first stages of empty nest syndrome and, well, I get a little depressed," he added.

The first lady added "we'll get family time in because anytime the girls are out of school that's important time for us to spend as a family.

"We're still parents where you have to juggle your time around when they're free. And summertime is that time," she said.

Asked where in the world they would like to visit at some point, the president mentioned that his wife had an interest in going back to India, and she said there are some "wonderful places here in the U.S." on her list.

"The truth is New Orleans," she said. "I've been there several times but I've never been to the French Quarter because when we're there we're usually working."

The Obamas have vacationed in Martha's Vineyard the past three years, but a senior administration official told CNN earlier this month that the family would not make a fourth annual visit. Some questioned how a respite at the high-class vacation spot would look in contrast to the still-struggling economy.

Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney has said that if elected, he would not spend his time in office "jetting around the world and using four years in office to see the world."

Instead, Romney said, he would "be spending some time at Camp David," the presidential retreat in Maryland.

Obama will likely take some long weekends in the run-up to the election, the official said. He spent last weekend out of sight at Camp David.
