SO: Metolius father kills son, says it was self-defense

A 72-year-old Metolius man said he shot and killed his 45-year-old son at the family's home late Monday night, telling deputies it was in self-defense as their intoxicated son attacked him and his wife, Jefferson County sheriff Jim Adkins said.

1869: The largest alluvial gold nugget in history, called the "Welcome Stranger," is found in Moliagul, Victoria, Australia. The nugget measured 24 inches by 12 inches and weighed more than 240 pounds. It's estimated that the value of the nugget in 2013 dollars would have been more than $3.7 million.
