PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Rescue officials say a 2-year-old boy who somehow got his hand trapped in an escalator at a suburban Portland mall had one finger severed and another severely damaged.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue officials say the boy was taken to a hospital Wednesday evening after the accident near the food court at the Washington Square Mall. KPTV-TV reports (http://is.gd/TWcORb) a fire department spokesman said the severed finger was recovered but it was not known whether doctors would be able to re-attach it.

The boy's condition was not immediately known late Wednesday night.
