La Pine man caught after car, foot, river chase

Swim in Deschutes didn't avert eventual capture

SUNRIVER, Ore. - A 48-year old La Pine man was arrested Saturday afternoon after leading police on a pursuit by stolen car, on foot and in the Deschutes River south of Sunriver, Oregon State Police said. It all ended when a K-9 team found him hiding in a shop building.

According to OSP Sgt. Dave Mackenzie, shortly after 3 p.m., an OSP Fish & Wildlife trooper tried to pull over a Honda Prelude for traffic violations near Sunriver.

The driver, later identified as Craig Andrew Marcum, was alone in the car and tried to elude the trooper and Deschutes County sheriff's deputies who joined the chase through neighborhoods south of Sunriver, troopers said.

Eventually, Marcum crashed the car, later confirmed to be stolen, and ran through the area, jumping in the river to try to lose his pursuers. But a sheriff's office K-9 team found his hiding spot.

Marcum was taken into custody and underwent a medical evaluation before being lodged in the county jail. The pending charges include unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, felony attempt to elude in a vehicle, misdemeanor attempt to elude on foot, reckless driving and second-degree burglary and criminal mischief charges. Bail totaled $30,000.

Mackenzie said OSP also was assisted by Sunriver police, Forest Service law enforcement and La Pine Fire and Rescue.
