BEND, Ore. - Need some extra motivation for keeping at that healthy eating New Year's resolution? Well, March is National Nutrition Month.
Synergy Health and Wellness in Bend is reaching out to you via Facebook with an "Enjoy the Taste Photo Contest."
Dietitians from all over the country are recognizing the month, and I spoke Monday with two in Bend who shared some health tips and their motivation.
"We'd like people to eat healthier of course, but also tastier meals," said Sara Kuhn, a registered dietitian.
It's a combination that can sometimes be hard to find, but the criteria of this contest is simple. Half the plate must be produce, and any starches must be whole food.
"You don't have to be a chef or go to culinary school to get excited about good nutrition," said RanDee Anshutz, another registered dietitian.
It's easy to get excited about a plate looks good.
"So I've got half of the plate with produce with my sauteed zucchini and carrots, then a little bit of whole grain with the quinoa with kale ribbons," Anshutz said.
There's also psychology to eating healthy. You can trick the mind with one simple step.
"It looks like a lot, because the plate is smaller. But it also looks like enough, and you're not deceived by all this open space on your plate that you could fill with other things," Kuhn said.
Both Anshutz and Kuhn encourage you to eat healthy, but want you to have fun with it, too.
"People have the impression that vegetables need to be a green salad with fat-free dressing, or a plain steamed vegetables -- and that's boring," Anshutz said. "So add flavor 00 have fun with your food, get excited about it. We just want you to get engaged."
You can post your plate photos on the event page, which can be found on Synergy Health and Wellness' Facebook page. The contest lasts all month, and the person whose photo gets the most likes will win a $200 gift bag.
