Bend Westside roundabout to close for a week

Newport-College Way upgrade planned; night work before

BEND, Ore. - The roundabout at Newport Avenue and College Way on Bend's Westside will be closed for up to a week starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 15th, as part of the city's 2014 Street Preservation and Maintenance Program.

Heavy traffic loads have deteriorated the roundabout. The city will rebuild and strengthen the roundabout with a higher-standard asphalt that will tolerate expected traffic loads for up to 40 years with only minimal maintenance.

The project requires fully closing the road to traffic night and day. With a goal to minimize disruption of traffic and the impact on area businesses, the city has offered the contractor a $10,000 incentive to finish it in three days.

Crews will post signs at the edges of the work zone three business days before the project begins. Detour signs will direct traffic along Pence Lane, Portland Avenue and Juniper Street during construction.

At the round, the city will be doing utility-related prep work from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10, in anticipation of the upcoming paving project.

During the prep work, crews will work at night only to minimize disruption to traffic, and traffic will be able to move through the intersection with the assistance of flaggers. Motorists should expect delays.
