ALBANY, Ore. -

Albany police and fire crews rescued two people from their burning apartment late Saturday night, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the apartment on Hill Street Southeast around 11:20 p.m. after an occupant called 911 to report they were unable to get out of their smoke-filled apartment.

Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the windows of the single-story apartment and a bedroom on fire. Police rescued one person from inside and firefighters rescued the second as they searched the apartment. Both victims were taken to the hospital, officials said.

It took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

A bedroom suffered significant fire damage, while heavy smoke damage occurred throughout the apartment. The extensive damage left all four units unable to be occupied, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the dollar loss has not been determined. There were no injuries to police or firefighters.
