As many as 40 passengers were injured when an Amtrak passenger train derailed in Hanford, California, on Monday afternoon, a sheriff's spokesman said.

"It was a traffic collision with a big rig and an Amtrak train which collided," Kings County Assistant Sheriff Dave Putnam said. "The big rig hauling cotton failed to yield."

Three of the five train cars left the tracks, Putnam said.
