MADRAS, Ore. -

Could there be a cougar creeping around a Madras school?

The scare came early Tuesday morning, when someone reported seeing the big cat right by Buff Intermediate School.

Officials went on patrol, while the school went on an "extra caution watch," bringing all the kids indoors.

"Out at Warm Springs, it's a common occurrence, we have a sighting out by Warm Springs Elementary yearly. But this is the first time we've had someone see one here in town," said Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Rick Molitor.

Kids were let back outside later in the day, with teachers keeping an extra eye out.

Officials said they had not seen the cougar during their perimeter search.

Meanwhile reports of a bear sighting on South Adams Road in Madras last week remain unconfirmed, officials say.
