MANZANITA, Ore. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the shooting death of a man who apparently took his own life on a trail overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The Oregon State Police says several citizens reported the death just before 9 p.m. on Friday after hearing a gunshot and finding the man at the end of a trail.

The trail leads from a viewpoint along Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast, between Oswald West State Park and Manzanita in Tillamook County.

Investigators say the victim was 44 years old. His name will be released following next of kin notifications.

First responders confirmed the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They said he was still in possession of a handgun. His vehicle was found near the trail entrance.
