CRESCENT LAKE, Ore. -

A Cottage Grove woman was killed Friday when her SUV was struck head-on by a pickup truck that slid into oncoming traffic on snowy Highway 58 west of Willamette Pass, Oregon State Police reported.

Troopers on Friday night identified the victim as Cynthia Anne Coop, 58, of Cottage Grove.

The teen driving the pickup was unhurt in the crash, which shut the highway for about two hours, The crash investigation restricted traffic for almost three more hours.

According to OSP Master Sergeant Lang Hinkle, shortly after noon, a 1997 Ford F250 flatbed pickup driven by Andrew J. Miles, 17, of Scio, was eastbound on Highway 58 near milepost 59, negotiating a right curve, when he lost control on the snow/slush covered roadway.

The pickup crossed into the westbound lane, colliding head-on with a 1994 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer driven by Coop, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers said Coop was wearing her seat belt, as was Miles, who was not injured.

OSP troopers from the Springfield Area Command and Oakridge offices are continuing the investigation. No enforcement action was taken pending completion of that investigation. Senior Trooper Ron Martin is the lead investigator.

The highway was closed in both directions for about two hours, at which time ODOT reopened one travel lane until the highway was completely opened shortly before 5 p.m.

Assisting OSP at the scene were ODOT, the Oakridge Fire Department and Central Cascades Fire and EMS.
