REDMOND, Ore. -

A popular Central Oregon flight destination and airline hub is about to get easier to get to and from.

United Airlines announced Tuesday that it will offer a third daily round-trip flight from Redmond's Roberts Field to San Francisco beginning Nov. 4.

Last month, Horizon Air announced it was shoring up flight frequencies on some routes and discontinuing service on others -- including dropping its only Redmond-Los Angeles non-stop -- effective with its fall schedule, starting Aug. 22."United is going to replace the service that Horizon is vacating by adding that third jet trip to San Francisco," said Mead and Hunt Vice President Mike Boggs.

The Central Oregon Visitors Association says adding a third non-stop jet service to and from the Bay Area will be great for tourism."It just expands the opportunity, not only for visitor volume travel on commercial service, but also our business travel," said COVA CEO Alana Audette.

Boggs said the new flight will meet the needs of two groups of travelers in the area.

"No. 1, the group that wants to go to Los Angeles, and No. 2,, the people who want to go to San Francisco and make connections to multiple destinations on the United system," he said.

Kim Falco, manager of SkyWest Airlines at Roberts Field, said San Francisco was the obvious choice for an additional flight."We already have a really strong presence in San Francisco, and it's just been a really good market for us," she said.

One thing that won't change: ticket prices."The prices are pretty much dependent on the competition in the market on the West Coast," Boggs said, "not so much the number of flights that they have in the market."The COVA official says they are always looking for ways to get more people to visit Central Oregon."It's certainly welcome news at a time where many airlines are scaling back their frequency in certain markets," Audette said.

The flights, operated by SkyWest Airlines as United Express service, are in addition to the airline's daily round-trip United Express service from Redmond to Denver and Portland.

"The addition of a third daily flight to San Francisco offers our customers more of what they're looking for: convenience, connections and choice," said Greg Kaldahl, United's vice president of resource planning. "With this additional round-trip and service to three United markets, our customers will have more access to United's global network than ever before."

In addition to providing service to and from San Francisco, United Express also offers daily flights to and from Denver International Airport (DEN) and Portland International Airport (PDX), making the Roberts Field-Redmond Municipal Airport the area's best portal for air travel throughout the U.S. and the world.

Passengers were able to start purchasing tickets for the new flights last Saturday. Tickets for all SkyWest-operated United Express flights may be purchased online at www.united.com or by calling United Airlines Reservations at 1-800-UNITED1 (1-800-864-8331).

Last year, United boosted its flights to Denver from summer and weekends-only to daily. At that time, it also trimmed its summer RDM-SFO schedule from three flights to two, but actually added seats as it upgraded from the 30-seat Embraer to the 50-seat regional jets (CRJ)
