Weary residents in rural Jefferson County near the Ashwood were busy Thursday battling a field fire that grew to more than 1,000 acres.
Officials with the Ash Butte Rangeland Protection Agency said the fire began Wednesday and grew before farmers could put it out.
Ashwood is about 30 miles northeast of Madras in eastern Jefferson County.
Crews from several agencies have been helping knock it down, but residents were pleading for more help, saying families working to fight the fires on their property are wearing down from the heat.
The fire was burning grass and scattered juniper trees, but residents worry a shift in wind could push it toward some ranches in the area.
