Dave Grall said he followed large black bear in his Suburban as it trekked near his Crossroads home, then met up with a smaller bear
SISTERS, Ore. -- Dave and Rhonda Grall have lived in the Crossroads neighborhood west of Sisters for five years, so they're used to seeing lots of wildlife roaming through the rural setting they call home. But the two black bears they encountered Wednesday evening was a first for them.Dave Grall told KTVZ.COM by e-mail that he and his wife were sitting in their living room around 6:30 p.m. when a large black bear "casually walked across our driveway and wandered between homes.""Rhonda called 911," he said, while "I jumped into one of our vehicles and followed the one bear, and it met up with a smaller bear."Grall said the pair of bears "stopped suddenly, then charged three deer, which immediately ran off.""And the bears' charge went back to a walk, and they appeared to settle around some brush in a neighbor's yard," Grall wrote, adding, "I wasn't getting out of the Suburban to follow."Oregon State Police soon arrived, and with a few shouts at the bears to scare them off, they ran back into the forest, Grall said. He said there was "no apparent damage, or rummaging through anyone's garbage.""Our family has lived out here for five years, and have never seen or heard of bears roaming our neighborhood," Grall said. "Racoons, deer and the occasional cougar are the normal wildlife."
