Fast Fire Destroys Home North of Burns

One of Two House Blazes on Busy Day For Burns, Hines Crews

A fast-moving fire destroyed a home north of Burns Sunday, part of a very busy afternoon and evening for fire crews from Burns and neighboring Hines, an official said Monday.

“That was probably the busiest day we ever had,” Hines Fire Chief Bob Spence said, with four call-outs: two house fires, a Dumpster blaze and extrication of a crash victim.

A homeowner was gone for the day when the blaze erupted around 3 p.m. on Foley Drive, north of Burns on the Paiute Indian Reservation, Spence said. A black column of smoke could be seen from in town, about six miles away.

The homeowner had it up for sale, but was out of town for the day when the fire broke out, the fire chief said.

The cause of the fire had not been determined Monday and a damage estimate not yet compiled, but Spence noted that a shop with an antique car burned, along with lumber and trailers. A motor home’s plastic door burned off and a van’s paint job was burned off on the back during the smoky blaze.

“We did save the boats -- that was all we could pull away,” Spence said. “We felt bad we couldn’t save it. The flames already were through the ceiling when we got there.”

“There was no interior attack -- it was just too dangerous” to enter the decades-old home, made of lathe-and-plaster construction, the fire chief said, so firefighters from Burns and Hines had to douse the flames from outside. They were on the scene until about 1:30 a.m.

The homeowner returned to find the tragic loss, and the Red Cross stepped in to help with housing, food and other needs, Spence said, adding that the home was insured. There were no injuries, but the man’s cat was missing.

Another fire broke out Sunday evening in the chimney and walls of another older home at 432 Pettibone Ave. W. in Hines, Spence said.

Firefighters “did a real good -- they got in there, used minimal water,” and were able to protect belongings, he said, adding that it probably was a home built for millworkers.

And if that's not enough, firefighters were back at the Foley Drive address for about two hours on Monday as that house fire flared up.

Sunday evening’s crash also happened on Foley Drive in Burns, near Triangle City Park, when a pickup went off the road ans struck a tree. Spence had few details, but said one occupant of the pickup involved reportedly suffered a couple broken ribs.
