Goodbye To Summer Is Hard For Many

Families Hit Up Campgrounds Before Kids Go Back To School

Looking for picture-perfect weather for your Labor Day weekend?

So was Portland resident April Quast.

She's been staying at Elk Lake Campground for more than a week, and on Friday, she finally got the weather she'd been waiting for.

"Today was the weather we were looking for," Quast said. "This is our third year coming to Elk Lake, and we love it. "But this was kind of what we were expecting and hoping for."

A freak snow storm in the mountains last weekend put ideas of hitting the slopes in some people's minds. For others, it brought big doubt we'd see summer weather again.

"I don't think people were expecting it to warm up this fast and be this warm," Elk Lake Campground General Manager Jay Walsh said. "I have a feeling that people will still be able to come up to the U.S. Forest Service campgrounds and find a spot."

Families planned camping trips with plenty of outdoor activities, knowing after this weekend, it's back to the books for the kids.

"We wanted to get outside and do something fun before they need to buckle down for the school year," Bend resident Jenni Griswold said. "Yeah, it's a big weekend."

"Stay-cations" have been the buzz lately, but Portland residents Jace and Jay Tuffli said they saw their summer slipping away and felt the need to get out of the city and hit the road.

"The price of gas was down, and you only get out once in a while," Jay Tuffli said. "And it's a beautiful weekend."

Gas prices in Bend are hovering at just below $3.

Whether you're hitting the mountains, links or just taking it easy, one thing's for sure -- summer fun is almost over.

"It's the last bash of summer," Griswold said. "It's going to be a good day."
