A 44-year-old Bend man visiting a friend in northeast Bend apparently lost his balance and fell over a second-story apartment balcony to his death Thursday night, police said.

Police and fire medics responded around 9:10 p.m. to 130 NE Sixth St., said Officer Scott Vincent.

Arriving officers found Clemuel W. Lutz, 44, laying on the ground, unresponsive, Vincent said.

Efforts to revive Lutz were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel, Vincent said.

Based on an investigation and witness statements, police determined the fall was accidental, Vincent said.

He had been at an upstairs apartment, standing near the railing, when he lost his balance and fell over the balcony, a distance of about 14 feet from the ground.

Police said alcohol appeared to be a factor, but that the investigation is continuing.
