BEND, Ore -- Nina Blackmore's life ended Wednesday, just a day after the Sisters 18-year-old was in the backseat of a car that slammed into a tree off Highway 20 near Black Butte Ranch.
The accident also took the life of 19-year-old Joshua Herrin of Bend.
Blackmore's mother, Heather Blackmore, said Thursday she wants her daughter to be remembered for being the most loving person she's ever known.
Blackmore also said she doesn't blame the driver, 23-year-old Stacia Roberts of Bend, for her daughter's death.
Deschutes County sheriff's detectives are still working on the case, and said the investigation process will take several weeks.
"We have a reconstructionist that came out to the scene," Sgt. Chad Davis said. "His report will take some time to put together, to get a speed calculation, and to get a diagram of the crash."
Davis said they are waiting on toxicology reports from tests done on Roberts.
For now, he said, the investigation is very much a waiting game.
"We'll also be waiting on evidence we sent the Oregon State Police crime lab to determine if alcohol or controlled substances were a factor," Davis said.
If either of the two is found to be a factor, detectives said, Roberts could be facing some serious charges.
"Types of charges that could result in some of these cases are criminally negligent homicide and possibly manslaughter," Davis said.
Davis said both Herrin's and Blackmore's families will meet with the victim's assistance representatives of the district attorney's office. He said the meeting will give the victims' families an opportunity to tell how they feel about the accident.
"The district attorney's office and the victim's assistance portion of the office, they do meet with the victims' families on all cases and consult with them closely," Davis said.
For now, the two families say they don't blame Roberts for their painful losses.
Detectives said even though the victims' families do have a chance to ask that no charges to be filed, as of now, there's no way of telling what Roberts' future will hold.
"It's going to be up to the district attorneys office to make the decision, from here on out," Davis said.
