BEND, Ore. -- If you've ever wondered what lies beneath the placid surface of the Deschutes River near Mirror Pond as you float or boat by, some divers found your disturbing answers Wednesday -- some pretty interesting junk from the submerged dumping ground.
Deep below its murky surface, the river holds the answer to other questions, such as: Whatever happened to my skateboard? Or, where did that bike rack disappear to?
Pulling a skateboard from the muddy bottom, one diver said, "I didn't know these worked in the water, too."
Deschutes County Sheriff's Search and Rescue divers volunteered their time to help Bend police with a cleanup that requires some special equipment and commitment,
"There's lots of junk," said SAR diver Leo Renk. "I mean, there's junk from since Bend has been here."
"There's wagon wheels down there. There's beer bottles. There's everything you can think of that nobody wants."
The main purpose of the clean-up was to retrieve bikes that may have been reported stolen. But the divers and officers found way more than they bargained for.
Canyon Davis, a community service officer with Bend Police, said, "So far, we've found two cell phones, about 14 bikes, an old parking meter from the '70's, miscellaneous pieces of steel and other debris."
Most of the bikes found were completely rusted over -- only one looked like it had potential, and Davis said also was the only one with a serial number that was visible.
Bend Parks and Rec came down to claim a steel handrail and bike rack, but the majority of stuff found will be trash.
Police are just happy it's out of the river, so floaters and boaters will be safer."
"We have a lot of people using our rivers, and we don't want anybody getting tangled up in these things or getting hurt on them," Davis said.
