The all-new Mazda6 made its North American debut Thursday at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.
On the outside, the styling takes its cues from recent Mazda concept cars. However, the changes are not just skin-deep –- there are several advancements under the hood as well.
The new Mazda6 will be introduced with an all-new 2.5-liter gasoline engine generating an estimated 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque.
Then, sometime in the middle of 2013, the car will be offered with a 2.2-liter clean diesel engine. Power output of the diesel version has not yet been announced.
Both engine choices have four cylinders. Mazda is joining several other car makers in dropping bigger (heavier) V-6 engines in favor of more efficient four-cylinder powerplants.
The new car will also feature something Mazda called Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), which will automatically engage the car’s brakes if the car senses that a low-speed front-end collision is about to happen. This system will also start to make its way onto other Mazda models.
Another new Mazda technology in the car is something called Intelligent Energy Loop, or i-ELOOP. This system is similar to regenerative braking systems used in hybrid cars in that it uses the car’s brakes to generate electricity that can then be used to power things like the air conditioning and radio.
The car is a 2014 model and will go on sale in January of 2013.
