Trucker lost control on icy curve

Thanksgiving Eve travel got off to a rough start Wednesday morning for motorists on Highway 26 over Mount Hood, which was shut for 2 ½ hours after a truck driver lost control on the icy road and struck a guardrail.
Michael Arthur Shields, 52, was not injured in the crash, which happened east of Government Camp around 7:30 a.m. and involved a westbound Safeway truck and trailer, said Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Duane Larson.
As the truck negotiated a downhill curve in icy conditions, Shields lost control and the semi slid into the eastbound guardrail, coming to a stop blocking all three lanes, Larson said.
No citations were issued, Larson said.
OSP and ODOT encouraged all drivers this holiday weekend to be aware that highway conditions can change unexpectedly, and to be attentive at all times while driving.
