A John Day man was killed late Friday afternoon when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a pickup on icy Highway 26 about 25 miles east of Prineville, Oregon State Police reported Saturday.
Wayne L. Elliott, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 4:20 p.m. and shut the highway for about two hours, said OSP Sgt. Don Wagner.
The 2004 Chevrolet utility vehicle driven by Elliott was westbound on Highway 26 near milepost 50 when he lost control on the icy roadway, Wagner said.
The Chevy crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with an eastbound 1998 Dodge 3500 pickup, pulling a utility trailer and driven by Robert C. Mair, 68, of Mitchell.
Elliott was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which left both vehicles blocking the highway.
Mair was flown by AirLink helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend for injuries resulting from the crash, Wagner said. His condition was not available, troopers said; a nursing supervisor said he was not in the patient listing Saturday evening.
Both men were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Wagner said.
OSP troopers from the Bend office are continuing the investigation, Wagner said. Wheeler and Crook County sheriff's deputies, Crook County Fire and Rescue and ODOT personnel assisted at the scene.
