Three Rivers Fuels Reduction Work Under Way

POSTED: 10:26 pm PST January 28, 2012
The snow and wetter weather has allowed the Three Rivers Fire District to continue the work on fuels treatment below the Rim Park subdivision near Lake Billy Chinook Airport.

The fuels work is being done on the steep slopes just below the homes at the Rim Park subdivision along Jordan Rd. The Rim Park – Phase II fuels reduction project is part of a 120-acre project began last spring.

The purpose of the project is to help reduce the potential of high-intensity wildfires that might threaten the Rim Park, Air Park and Forest Park subdivisions located on the southeast side of the Three Rivers Fire District.

The first phase of the project began in 2010 in the Air Park subdivision surrounding the Lake Billy Chinook Airport . Lake Billy Chinook Airport has been identified as a location for “shelter in place.” The intent with this is to provide local residents and summer visitors alike with a safe temporary location to wait out a wildland fire incident.

When the danger from the fire is over, residents would then be able to quickly return to their properties freeing up firefighters to proceed to areas where they are most needed. This option is preferable to attempting a full scale evacuation to Culver along Jordan Road, around the lake, which is unsuitable for an evacuation route.

This fuels reduction project was made possible through a federal grant from the American Recovery Reinvestment Act, administered through, and in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

The Three Rivers Fire District is continuing to work with Oregon Department of Forestry and federal agencies on additional fuels reduction projects throughout the district. There has been some initial work done on the BLM beach east of the Three Rivers day use. More work is planned above the BLM Beach this spring. The fire district is continuing to meet with ODF to discuss future projects within the district.

The fire crews plan to continue the burning operations over the next week. We hope to have the fires burn quickly and to have the smoke up and out of the area quickly. Burning operations begin shortly after 8:00am and burn till approximately 2:00pm. For questions regarding these and other fuel reduction projects within the Three Rivers Fire District, please contact Fire Chief Don Colfels at 541-771-0992.
