According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, male breast reductions rose 5 percent in 2012. Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breast tissue. According to the ASPS, this usually occurs in boys during puberty and can continue into adulthood.

To correct gynecomastia, males can undergo surgery.

However, while surgery can treat the physical issue surrounding gynecomastia, the ASPS says the emotional affects can be greater. A study shows boys with gynecomastia had lower self-esteem, social functioning and overall mental health compared to boys without the condition, according to the ASPS.
