Ensworth Elementary School was placed on lockdown and an 11-year-old former student was cited by police Wednesday for allegedly pointing a toy gun toward students and staff on the northeast Bend school's playground, police said.
Officers responded shortly after noon to the school on Northeast Daggett Lane after officials said the former student was seen with an Airsoft-style gun on the school grounds, said Sgt. Chris Carney.
Ensworth Elementary went into a routine, precautionary lockdown during the incident, the sergeant said.
The incident occurred during lunch recess, when a staff member saw the former fifth grader climb a fence and enter the playground area. The staff member approached the boy, but he quickly climbed back over the fence and crossed the street.
That's when an adult saw the boy pointing a toy gun toward the kids and called police.
With the help of school staff, police found the boy, whom they did not identify, at his home.
An investigation found the boy had several toy guns and pointed at least one in the direction of students and staff on the playground.
Based on the suspect's age, he was cited on menacing and second-degree criminal trespass charges and released to his mother, Carney said.
"The Bend Police Department would like to remind everyone not to bring firearms or toy guns onto school or government property," Carney said.
