ARLINGTON, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Patrol says 1 of its troopers was hurt Friday when his patrol car was hit by a vehicle on Interstate 5 near Arlington. The accident backed up traffic in the freeway's northbound lanes for about 10 miles.
Trooper Keith Leary says the trooper had pulled his unmarked car to the left shoulder of the freeway when it was struck by another car at about 11 a.m. The officer, 58-year-old Mack Hyatt, was taken to an Everett hospital for tests and treatment. Leary said Friday evening that Hyatt had been released from the hospital and would be recovering at home for at least a week from bruising and soreness.
The State Patrol said the man driving the other vehicle, 50-year-old Ronald Peterson of Ferndale, was not injured. Leary says he was arrested and booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of vehicular assault.
The crash blocked the left northbound lane for about three hours. Southbound traffic also slowed. Leary said traffic was returning to normal by late Friday afternoon.
