BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Researchers at the Idaho National Laboratory are getting $5 million to establish a high energy battery test facility.
The Energy Department announced the award last week. The INL, located in eastern Idaho, was among several national labs named by the agency for more than $104 million in federal stimulus funding.
Each of the projects is intended to support the development and improvement of clean energy and efficiency technologies.
The new testing facility at INL will focus on developing the next generation of low-cost batteries for cars and trucks. The project supports President Obamas goal of putting 1 million plug-in electric vehicles on the road by 2015.
Last week, INL officials announced that researchers at its Advance Vehicle Testing Activity facility had completed 1 million miles of testing on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
