MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - Tiny Prospect School in the Cascade foothills of Southern Oregon has closed for the rest of the week after 30% of students and teachers stayed home with flu symptoms.
The town of Prospect's only school has 210 students and 16 teachers, but Superintendent Don Alexander says 69 students and five teachers were out sick Monday.
State Superintendent of Education Susan Castillo has encouraged schools to stay open during the swine flu pandemic, because closing doesn't stop the spread of the disease.
But Alexander says their remote location makes it tough to find substitute teachers.
It is the first school closing in Jackson County this year over flu.
