Las Vegas man accused of smuggling drug linked to Ore. woman's suicide

McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A Las Vegas man accused of smuggling a powerful animal tranquilizer believed to have used in an Oregon woman's suicide is to be arraigned this morning.

Jeff George Ostfeld was arrested on drug charges at the U.S.-Mexico border in May after Mexican authorities found 29-year-old Jennifer Malone of Roseburg dead in a hotel room in Nuevo Progreso (noo-WAVE-oh Pro-GRESS-oh).

Authorities say Ostfeld was carrying 1,200 milliliters of pentobarbital when U.S. officials stopped him.

Malone's boyfriend, Tom Piazza, says she suffered from chronic depression and had attempted suicide before. But he says she couldn't have done it without help.

Piazza says about 100 people attended a memorial service for Malone in Oregon last weekend, and on Sunday family and friends spread her ashes along the North Umpqua River.
